Tech 335 Assignments

NOTE: This list is preliminary. Due dates will vary, and reading assignments will be added weekly.

Assignments For Week 1

1. Read Ch 3 Design. Read Ch 5,6,7 Room Design Criteria.
2. Fill out the Initial Design Checklist.
3. Prepare a House Plan on A-size paper. Use the following criteria:

Line quality must be good to excellent.
Walls, doors and windows must be drawn to 1/8" = 1' scale.
Typical building codes must be followed, such as min: halls 3', habitable rooms 7.5'
clear height, WC clearance of 24", and so on.
Include built-in fixtures & cabinetry, windows, door swings, clearance allowed for plumbing stacks if necessary, major traffic patterns outlined, and major furniture,
Avoid traffic in work areas
Separate the quiet and work areas.
Use space efficiently, including not too many walls, and not too many halls.

Assignments For Week 2

1. Read Ch 2 Basic House. Read Ch 16 Floor Plans. Study Pg 642 Clearance Requirements.
2. Prepare a Floor Plan for all floors except the basement. See the criteria in week three.

Line quality must be good to excellent.

Assignments For Week 3

1. Be sure to have read carefully Ch 16 Floor Plans. Read Ch 2 Basic House Designs. Read Ch 13 Doors and Windows for details related to floor plans. Study Pg 623 R-values of typical materials. Note especially the typical values per inch for wood, mansory, glass, fiberglass batts, celulose, extruded styrofoam, and expanded bead styrofoam.
2. Prepare a Floor Plan for all floors except the basement. (This assignment is due Tuesday of week 4) Use the following criteria:

Line quality must be good to excellent.
Include appropriate title block documentation, a door and window schedule (this can be on a separate smaller sheet of paper if you wish). Include all walls and windows, including the garage, all built-in cabinets and fixtures, and all necessary dimensions.
Use appropriate symbols & abbreviations, north arrow, stair arrow, entrance arrow, 2 sections & 2 callouts, note the floor coverings as well as all other appropriate items such as closet rods and closet shelves. Note the stackwalls. Include a dashed line indicating the outline of the roof overhang (that is, drip edge). Use a 16" or 24" grid to design the shape of the rooms and exterior dimensions. Be careful to follow all appropriate building codes such as halls & stairs 3' wide, BR windows open, etc.

1. Read Ch 8 Plot Plans. Read Ch 9 Foundations. Study Pg 633 Welded Wire Reinforcement. Study Pg 643 Wall Systems.
2. Prepare a Plot Plan.

1. Read Ch 11 Sill & Floor Design. Study Pg 618 Span Data for Floors. Study Pg 646-7 TJI Details.
2. Prepare a Foundation Plan.

1. Read Ch 12 Wall & Ceiling Construction. Study Pg 617 Truss Designs.
2. Prepare a Joist Plan.

Assignments For Week 7

1. Read Ch 20 Electrical Plans. Study page 607 Electrical Symbols. Study Pg 636-7 Wood Foundations.
2. Prepare a Section Elevation.

Assignments For Week 8

1. Read Ch 21 Plumbing Plans. Study Pg 606 Plumbing Symbols. Study Pg 640-1 STC Ratings.
2. Prepare a Plumbing Plan.
3. Prepare a Wiring Plan.

Assignments For Week 9

1. Read Ch 13 Doors & Windows. Read Ch 17 Roof Designs.
2. Prepare Two Exterior Elevations.

Assignments For Week 10

1. Read Ch 27 New Products. Study Pg 657 Radon.
